Capture and alignment of phi29 viral particles in sub-40 nanometer porous alumina membranes.
Bacteriophage phi29 virus nanoparticles and its associated DNA packaging nanomotor can provide for novel possibilities towards the development of hybrid bio-nano structures. Towards the goal of interfacing the phi29 viruses and nanomotors with artificial micro and nanostructures, we fabricated nanoporous Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) membranes with pore size of 70 nm and shrunk the pores to sub 4...
متن کاملCapture of particles in soft porous media.
We investigate the capture of particles in soft porous media. Liquid foam constitutes a model system for such a study, allowing the radii of passage in the pore space to be tuned over several orders of magnitude by adjusting the liquid volume fraction. We show how particle capture is determined by the coupling of interstitial liquid flow and network deformation, and present a simple model of th...
متن کاملControlled fabrication of patterned lateral porous alumina membranes.
Confined lateral alumina templates are fabricated with different pore sizes by changing the acid electrolyte and the anodization voltage. The control of the number of pore rows down to one dimension is also achieved, by controlling the thickness of the starting aluminum film as well as the anodization voltage. We observe that the mechanism of pore formation in the lateral regime is very similar...
متن کاملSynthesis of sub-nanometer gold particles on modified silica.
The deposition of gold on silica tends to give large particles when using conventional techniques. We report the preparation of 0.8 ± 0.2 nm particles on a modified SBA-15 support. The method involves the functionalization of silica with amine groups and deposition of gold at basic pH. These catalysts are highly active and selective in the dehydrogenation of formic acid.

INTRODUCTION: Joint implant wear particles are recognized to play a major role in initiating periprosthetic osteolysis leading to aseptic loosening and implant failure. It has been shown that particle composition, size, shape and concentration influence the inflammatory response to wear particles [1,2]. Metal-metal (MM) and ceramic-ceramic (CC) bearings are common alternatives to conventional m...
